The Kolath
System
|
The Kolath System served as
the home system of the Dark Lightning Strike Fleet. Explored and colonized
only recently, the system has been built up and
modernized mostly during the period
after the DLSF occupied it after the NI's founding. It is now the military,
economic, and political center of the DLSF. The Kolath System's history
extends well into antiquitiy, however. Ruins on Kolath Prime have dated
back to pre-Republic times, with hints at technology more advanced than
ours today. A human population was alreayd in place when Kolath was colonized,
though they have no more memory of their history than stories borne of
legend. The whole system itself is rich in resources, and provides an excellent
base for the DLSF and its various projects. The starfighter manufacturing
facility on Rhiannon is the largest in NI Space, and provides line starfighter
designs to all the fleets in the NI...

Notes: Vree is a tiny rock planet, and the closest to Kola, the sun. Due
to its close proximity to the star, extreme temperatures from day to
night make colonization impossible.
In addition, a number of probes have been sent to and below the surface,
and have discovered that even
if the planet were in a more habitable
position, the scarce resources and ultra-light gravity would make building
facilities there impractical.
One can only speculate whether or
not this world will be of any use to the DLSF in the future. |

Kolath II
(Kolath)
|
Notes:
Kolath is the homeworld of the DLSF and the center of operations for the
fleet. It is a jungle planet with a lush environment and a
large variety of both flora and fauna.
The planet was colonized so long ago that it is not recorded in any known
log. In fact, there was no
knowledge of a human civilization
there until recently. A rough vision of Kolath’s history can be inferred
from records planetside, however.
Since the planet boasts such a small
population (comparably to other human-origin worlds) it seems clear that
Kolath was a colony, and that
at some point within the last few
thousand years the world would have been down to perhaps less than a few
million people, considering its
size now. Still, evidence of an advanced
but ancient civilization that flourished many thousand years ago is rampant;
ancient ruins of cities are
scattered across the continents, long
since overgrown by the dense foliage of the jungle. Huge pyramids and citadels
jot out from the canopy
at some points. These ruins only recently
began to be uncovered, and old records show that the race that occupied
the world (definitely
humanoid) was at least advanced enough
to explore their own star system. Nevertheless, almost nothing else remains
of the ancient
civilization, save myths handed down
by mouth from the world’s current habitants. Now, the people living on
Kolath have made another
advanced society, having made their
first tentative steps throughout their solar system when "rediscovered"
by the Imperial Scouting
Corps. The planet has encountered
other races before, as they were passing though or mapping the system,
and have thus has acquired
some "modern" technical knowledge.
Many of the native population have
welcomed modernization by the DLSF with open arms. They have been generous
with their assistance in
building the buildings and defenses
needed by the DLSF. Whether or not the natives have an agenda of their
own is uncertain, but it seems
clear they are eager to explore beyond
the boundaries of their home system. Most of the informed and pro-NI natives
now live in what is
known as the Command Platform, a massive
city entailed below.
The Command Platform
The DLSF Command Platform more than
a command center. It is an entire city, spreading for kilometers. Due to
the dense foliage, the
surrounding jungle has been cleared
out around the city for several kilometers. To protect the city from surface
assaults and also the
planet’s indigenous predators, one
hundred meter high walls encircle the city. The walls were constructed
even as the city was just being
enlarged from its original size (at
the time it was the planet’s largest city). Thus the city is actually expanding
to fill the barrier made by the
reinforced duracrete. Once that space
is filled, more layers will be made above those on ground level, rather
than expand the barrier,
although this could be a possible
maneuver. Such advancement is years away, however, as the area surrounded
by the walls it estimated to
be able to hold more than one hundred
million people. At the north side, the barrier starts out straight for
a few kilometers, then turns down
to follow the large river beside which
the city was founded. The walls edge in closer and closer, until finally
coming together at the southern
end. From far above, this makes the
city take the appearance of a duracrete-gray lightning bolt, no accident
on the part of the designers. The
Command Platform is one of the only
man-made objects on Kolath visible from orbit.
ICSTA Academy
The Imperial Command Staff Training
Academy is located near the heart of the Command Platform (which is to
say, the center) not far from
the Command Center itself. Here esteemed
DLSF Officers train for the skills they will use when taking on command
positions, and how to
deal with the responsibility. The
Academy offers, at present, four classes, all of which must be passed to
graduate. As Sector Admiral
Scourge noted in his opening description
of the Academy’s courses: "During the courses you are required to attend
to several online
meetings on IRC and complete several
tests. When the four courses are over you must complete a final exam in
order to graduate." The
ICSTA is renowned throughout Epsilon
Sector, and is planning to be used in conjunction with similar Academies
in other NI member clubs
in the future.
Planetary Defense Grid
The PDG is the most advanced system
of planetary defense available today. This system was designed by the Empire’s
best strategists and
Tacticians. The PDG consist of several
otherwise independent systems linked together, and is designed for the
money-no-object defense of
the Empire’s capital worlds. Only
appropriate that one is used to defend the homeworld of one of the Heralds
of the New Imperium as well.
The system begins on the ground, with
a massive shield generator. This system is powerful enough to withstand
any bombardment short of a
sustained attack by a Torpedo Sphere.
The shield system has two backup generators, and in the event that the
shield should fall, hundreds
of Extended-range Heavy Turbolasers
would pound the enemy into submission, coupled with Planetary Ion Cannons
and Torpedo
Launchers.
In addition, the DLSF boasts multiple
home-defense fighter squadrons ready to launch at a moment’s notice.
Back in orbit, a ring of satellites
encircles the world. Each has multiple proton-torpedo launchers and an
anti-missile laser system.
The main line of defense, and the backbone
of planetary defensive systems around the Empire, are several Golan -class
Space Defense
Platforms. There are all three types
in use over Kolath. These are considered the ultimate in protective capability;
indeed, they would even
be a match of an Imperial Star Destroyer.
For more information of the Golan Defense Platforms, see the Imperial Space
Stations Guide
available on the DLSF Holonet, IMP
Code 2435-9078.
The PDG, combined with the entire DLSF
fleet which would theoretically be in orbit to defend the planet, could
be considered overkill by
some. In the old days, such threats
against Imperial targets would be unthinkable. However, the Empire is gone,
and this is the New
Imperium. The PDG is thus always kept
on alert status. The defense of Kolath would be a worst case scenario,
and it is not anticipated that
such an attack will ever occur. Still,
the DLSF considers it better to be safe than sorry, or in other words,
dead.
Zanier and Silas orbit Kolath every
three days, at relatively similar speeds along the same path as the planet’s
rotation. They are both visible
at the same time, and their orbits
vary so slightly that it takes thousands of years for Silas, the faster
of the two, to move around the planet
one extra time to lap its brother.
Both planets have no atmosphere, and are somewhat typical of "lunar landscapes"
often portrayed.
However, a certain element in Zanier’s
thin atmosphere lends a greenish tint to the planet as viewed from the
surface of Kolath. Silas,
slightly smaller than Zanier, retains
the standard off-white to gray color of many lunar surfaces. There are
small mining colonies on both
moons, which supply both Kolath and
Rhiannon with minerals and metals necessary for the production that is
always taking place. The
moons also provide extra defense for
the homeworld, with permanent fighter garrisons and planetary defense grids
in place.

Kolath III
(Rhiannon)
|
Notes:
Rhiannon’s circular orbit takes it close to Kolath II once every year.
The planet’s temperature is usually very chilly, and without
proper insulation a human would contract
hypothermia within a couple hours. No epidermal toxins are present, making
full environment suits
unnecessary. Still, there is not enough
oxygen in the atmosphere to support human life, and a number of other poisonous
gases make breath
masks a necessity. At first glance,
the planet seems to be a worthless wasteland of dust and sand. However,
a closer look, or a deep surface
scan reveals the presence of a special
mineral used in the creation of the Twin-Ion-Engine. This makes the planet
a prime candidate for a
manufacturing center for the TIE-class
starfighters (the more advanced classes, of course). Incidentally a large
facility has been constructed,
and it supplies the DSLF and some
of the other New Imperium forces (including the Jedi Division) with an adequate supply
of starfighters.
Also mined are various metals used
in a myriad of uses throughout the galaxy: metals used in starfighter and
starship armor, utility vehicles,
household appliances, and many more.
The factory and shipyards are by far
the largest facilities on the planet. There are a number of colony domes
and cities, however, which boast
anactive population of 2,300,000.
Many of these are workers in the factories and mines, and use the tunnel-train
transit system (TTT)
to ferry themselves back and forth
from the cities (their homes and recreation areas) and their places of
work. Work is always progressing
on Rhiannon, and new facilities are
always under construction. It is estimated that Rhiannon will become much
more populous and popular as
the New Imperium grows and the need
for fighters increases.

Kolath IV
(Kalas)
|
Notes:
Kalas is the largest planet in the Kolath System. Its swirling purple clouds
give it a serene look from a distance, but inside the
massive clouds of gas is an atmosphere
more hostile than the void of space. Though they offer no rain, the storms
produce winds of several
hundred miles an hour and lightning
fifty times more powerful than that on Kolath. However, while the world
is not relatively valuable in
itself, it is useful in that is harbors
sanctuary to its seven moons, which are somewhat valuable to the DLSF.
Moons: Only three of Kalas’ moons have
populations. These are Bretai, Nali, and Vilah. The others are either unsupportable
of human life
or not worth the effort of colonizing.
All moons are entailed below.
Bretai is the closest moon to
Kalas, and one of the largest. The moon has several large craters from
ancient impacts from asteroids captured
by Kalas’ massive gravity well. A
sizable colony exists on Bretai, however most of the areas of population
are located underground. What
appears to have been underground water
flows at one point have hollowed out tunnels which certainly helped settlers
to build. Underground
colonies have been built, and the
tunnel system, which has been built around, provides the means of transportation
for the colonies’
inhabitants. Many local rumors exist
regarding the origin and possible inhabitants of the tunnels before NI
colonization, even though erosion
has been scientifically deemed the
original cause.
Bretai is known to occasionally (and
randomly) experience small earthquakes, or "moonquakes". While the colonies
were made to withstand
such tremors, the experiences do nothing
to hinder the local myths of the inhabitants, who believe in an "ancient
race that once built cities
below the surface". Scientists strictly
rule out such a possibility, however.
Nali is the second moon from
Kalas, and is covered in red sand. Its tranquil state (no seismic activity
whatsoever) convey a strange feeling,
as does the dry atmosphere. The flat
terrain and almost 0 percent humidity enable views of hundreds of kilometers,
and much farther from
the vapor-condensers rising up into
the sky. The air is extremely dry, allowing beautiful views of Kalas in
the sky, even during the daytime.
At Nali’s close distance, the planet
can take up a full fourth of the sky, making it a definite tourist attraction
in the Kolath System.
Nali’s atmosphere is lower in oxygen
than most humans are comfortable with, and breath masks are suggested.
All the colonies on the
surface are enclosed, many with transparisteel
domes that enable inhabitants to admire the incredible view. Nali is truly
a strange and
inviting place, though it is not the
strangest body in the system, not to mention the whole sector.
Zeman is an ice world. Temperatures
fall so low that no known life of any kind in the galaxy could survive.
The rocky world is covered in
mountains and peaks of ice, with jagged
cliffs and deadly falls. The surface itself is under kilometers of ice.
In addition, gale-force winds
make landing at all a risky procedure,
and would blow any climber of a mountainside almost instantly. Both the
ISC and the Scientific
Division ruled it out pretty quickly
for colonization.
Vilah is the third colonized
moon of Kalas. This sattelite has enough of an atmosphere and an oxygen-rich
air supply to support life without
the use of breath masks. However,
most people find the indigenous flora to be quite odd – there are no trees
per se, plenty of brush covers
the countryside. The colonists have
brought in other plants, but nothing taller than a high bush can survive.
This is due to a strange
unknown compound in the moon’s water
supply. Scientists have dubbed this compound non-toxic to humans, however,
and thus the moon’s
own water supply is used by the colonists
(once purified, of course).
The main use of Vilah to the DLSF
is the large, "top secret" Research Center there. The facility is located
in the center of a massive crater,
in which grows more kinds of flora
than anywhere else on the moon. At this center, it is only known that research
on nearly all types of
technological advances occurs. All
other information is restricted.
Screch a rocky moon with a thick
atmosphere. This is caused, quite incidentally, to the thousands of active
volcanoes that dot the planet’s
surface. Lava flows and the extreme
greenhouse effect make this moon inhabitable. In fact, the volcanoes are
so rampant that it is estimated
that a new layer of crust is formed
every millennia. Screch is still the center of a large amount of study,
as to why such a mid-size moon is so
active with volcanoes.
Breveta is the largest moon
of Kalas. At first the green color of the world and its bluish atmosphere
seemed inviting to the Scouting Corps,
who sent a probe down to the surface.
The probe ventured around for several hours, when the scouts fond something
strange: the greenish
lichens were growing on the ship.
Apparently the spores were airborne, due partly to the light gravity of
the moon. It seems that the planet
is not very dense, at least below
the surface. The ship continued to explore in spite of the growing lichen,
until eventually the scouts found
the hull integrity falling. They tried
to pull the ship out, but the lichen had begun eating into the drives and
the ship crashed moonward.
Within an hour the ship has been dissolved
from the outside in. The scouts decided to cut their losses and leave rather
than bother with the
moon any longer.
Larga is the outermost moon
of the Kalas planetary system. The moon is so far out that the planet seems
almost as large as the system’s
sun, Kola. It is what has come to
be considered a "typical" lunar body, with a rocky crust and a moderate
layer of space dust on the surface.
Initial scans further revealed that
the moon has almost no mineral value, making it perhaps the most "ordinary"
planetary body in the
system. A self contained colony would
be possible to establish, however with no flow of money coming from the
world, not many would want
to settle there, and it was deemed
unsuitable for colonization.

Kolath
V (Edo)
|
Notes: Edo is best described as an Acid World. While the planet’s gravity
keeps potentially destructive chemicals confined to the surface, large
pools of it are gathered as certain spots around the world. The atmosphere
is composed mostly of methane, and there are methane oceans and even methane
rain. The ISC has deemed an actual colony unfeasible, however a mining
colony has been established. Large extractors have been set up to gather
the acidic compounds in the pools, and automated droid ships come in regularly
to ferry the chemicals to the desired location for refining. A lonely,
bored 20-man team is all that populates this world, overseeing the massive
machines and spending their small salaries to order what commodities they
can afford on the incoming transports.
Edo’s moon, Formi,
is a rocky planetoid with a plentiful supply of minerals and gem deposits.
A permanent mining colony has been established there, and due to its valuable
nature a planetary defense grid has been placed on-surface. |

Kolath
VI (Oorim)
|
Notes:
Oorim is the outermost world in the Kolath System. It is a rock planet,
with little in the way of natural resources. Only a small mining outpost
on and below the surface connects to the manmade tunnels which are used
to reach the minerals deep underneath. Its scarce resources aside, the
planet is still put to use by the DLSF. A starfighter training grounds
has been constructed on the surface, with a charted path and an obstacle
course in place. DLSF pilots often fly sorties down to the surface and
fly the training course.
The second reason Oorim is
valuable to the DLSF is because of its Early Warning System (EWS). The
EWS is considered one of the best and most advanced aspects of the New
Imperium. A massive satellite dish is the center of a listening post and
mini-colony. 2,500 people live of Oorim, most who work day and night monitoring
the EWS. The actual warning system is a string of satellites strung out
around Oorim’s orbit and other popular jump points, designed to pick up
the first trace of a jump in or out-system and instantly send the data
back to Kolath via the Holonet. Oorim is, due to importance, administered
with the most current technology in sensors, scanning arrays, long range
listening devices, and others. This ensures that if, in the unlikely event
of a large scale invasion, the Dark Lightning Strike Fleet would instantly
know of the attack and have amply time to prepare a defense. Day to day
traffic, however, is simply monitored and posted to the homeworld and the
ship’s desired location. The EWS is an advanced technological advancement
and a powerful addition to the DLSF’s resources. With the threat of possible
Altarin'Dakor invasion and Rebel or pirate attacks, time will tell if this
system will truly be tested… |
